Queering the Bible Zoom Course - 10/21
Learn how to read the Bible with a queer lens! Join Dr. Jimmy Hoke for an interactive Zoom session designed to introduce learners to how to find LGBTIQ2Q+ perspectives in and around biblical texts. This introductory queer approach moves beyond the "basics" of reading the Bible to argue against queer- and transphobic reading. More than supporting inclusion of trans and queer folks, we will explore interpretations that foster transformation and queer liberation.
This is a hands-on, interactive seminar that guides participants through interpreting texts themselves, using queer strategies. This way, they learn skills they can use to read the Bible on their own. Everyone will leave feeling equipped and excited to apply these skills in their own contexts.
Monday, October 21st at 8pm (EDT) on Zoom
This course has a $15 registration fee. (Please contact Erin for scholarship info.) Click here to sign up directly at Dr. Hoke's website. Then send Erin an email to let her know you plan to attend.
Pilgrims in the Wild - 10/12
Come take a hike!
Meet at the Pierce Mill Parking Lot on Saturday 10/12 at 10am. Get your steps in, soak in a bit of nature’s beauty, and chat with your church friends, too. Hope to see you out there!
October Issues Among Us - 10/8
For our October Issues Among Us gathering, we’ll meet at the Manse and watch the PBS documentary “A Citizen’s Guide to Preserving Democracy.” Bring a movie snack to share and engage in conversation after the show. Please RSVP to Erin (erin@churchofthepilgrims.org) if you plan to be there!
Soup Night - 10/2
We’re making soup to share with our neighbors! Come to the Bird Room on Wednesday 10/2 and help chop and simmer all the good stuff to make meals to share on Sundays at Open Table. See you in the Bird Room at 5pm (or whenever you can make it!).
Sept. Issues Among Us - WIN Public Safety Mini-Conference 9/22
For our September 2024 Issues Among Us outing, we’re going to the Washington Interfaith Network (WIN) Public Safety Mini Conference on Sunday 9/22 from 2-6pm at Covenant Baptist UCC in SW.
The Washington Interfaith Network Public Safety Team invites member congregations and allies to join us Sunday afternoon, September 22nd, to discuss the state of public safety in D.C., to reflect on the theological vision we bring to the work, and to prepare to organize and advocate effectively for approaches that are equitable and sustainable. We will be building relationships across institutions, including faith-based and secular, and learning about approaches that can genuinely help our communities. The afternoon will be educational, interactive, and inspiring.
All are welcome! We particularly encourage congregations that have been involved in public safety/gun violence, or who want to be, to send a team of 3 or more. It’s always easier to mobilize if you have a team! The Mini-Conference will be Sunday September 22 at Covenant Baptist United Church of Christ, 3845 S Capitol St SW, from approximately 2-6 PM.
If you plan to attend or if you have questions, please contact Erin at erin@churchofthepilgrims.org.
End of Summer Guest Preachers
Please join us in welcoming a pair of fabulous guest preachers the next two weeks during worship at Pilgrims!
On Sunday, August 25th, Elder (and Presbytery Vice-Moderator Elect) Jesy Littlejohn will be joining us! Jesy (they/them) is a member at Oaklands Presbyterian Church, works as the Director of Operations for More Light Presbyterians, was a commissioner to the most recent GA in Salt Lake City earlier this summer, and does a whole lot of other churchy and presbytery stuff to keep them busy!
On Sunday, September 1st, Elder (and Candidate for Ordination who already passed all their ordination exams, WHAT?!) Flanny Flanigan will be preaching. Flanny (they/them) is a Pilgrim, and Resident Minister at Georgetown University, and a Chaplain in the INOVA Hospital System, and also does a whole lot of fun stuff to keep busy.
We are so excited to welcome both of these ministry leaders to share in worship at Pilgrims. Erin, however, will be missing all the fun, as she will be on vacation 8/23 - 9/2.
